Myattsfield Vineyard and Winery

Myattsfield Vineyard and Winery

Myattsfield Vineyard and Winery is nestled in the picturesque Bickley Valley within the Perth Hills wine region, just thirty-five minutes from Perth’s CBD. The winery is well known for its use of alternate warm climate varietals, such as vermentino, viognier, tempranillo, montepulciano, durif, touriga and mourvèdre. The winery is owned and operated by a husband-andwife winemaking team, which over the last twenty years has accumulated forty-two wine show trophies. In 2020 Myattsfield was awarded Ray Jordan’s Small Producer of the Year, followed by Best Value Producer in 2021. In 2023, Western Australia’s Good Food Guide awarded its vermentino Regional Wine of the Year and it has previously been a top five finalist for Winestate Magazine’s Alternate Wine of the Year.

Myattsfield originated from a family farm in London. Joseph Myatt established a market garden on land and concentrated his efforts on improving and popularising rhubarb. By 1840, the Myatt family were Britain’s leading producers of rhubarb, supplying 12,000 bunches a day to the London market and via the new railway system to other parts of the country. More than 175 years later, as descendants of Joseph, the business is farming in the Bickley Valley, Western Australia.

Myattsfield is home to the first planting of durif on the Carmel Vineyard and works with dedicated growers to produce high-quality fruit. The vineyard employs a range of sustainable practices, including using guinea fowl and geese for pest control and applying a blend of organic, traditional and modern management techniques to achieve the best results. The cellar door offers an intimate experience with up to twelve wines available, and the owner and winemakers are on hand to guide you through your tasting. Surrounded by expansive gardens and lawns, the cellar door boasts stunning views of the valley and vineyard below.

Visitors can relax outdoors with a glass of wine and their own picnic to enjoy the picturesque setting. The winery hosts a variety of events, including the annual Harvest Festival and Music in the Paddock afternoons. Myattsfield also operates an online shop and offers a wine club called the Left Field Wine Club. Club members receive a quarterly six-pack of wines, featuring pre-release and museum wines, and exclusive small-batch selections crafted specifically for the club. Members can enjoy special access to workshops and behind-the-scenes tastings, providing insight into the winemaking process and grape growing. Interactive workshops for the public include vintage breakfasts, barrel tastings, disgorging sessions and red wine blending workshops.

Tasting Notes

2024 Vermentino
⇐ 2024 Vermentino

Fermented in a combination of stainless steel and ceramic egg. Subtle aromas of orange blossom, pear and pink lady apples leap from the glass. The palate is vibrant with a prickly acid that drives focus and freshness. Flavours of lemon rind, pulpy grapefruit and fresh apple fill the mouth and finishes with an attractive briny/ saline dryness.

2024 Rose
⇐ 2024 Rose

A blend of Mourvedre, Nebbiolo and Viognier. The nose offers lifted scents of red berries, rose water, spice and grapefruit. The palate offers some texture and mouthfeel with soft red berry fruits and sweet spice, finishing with a faint tannic dryness.

2022 Tempranillo
⇐ 2022 Tempranillo

The palate is elegant and medium bodied with a complex layering of dark cherry, blackcurrant, clove spice, mocha and bright red fruit flavours. The tannins have a juicy suppleness that still give good structure and a dry dusty finish. It is a wine with freshness and vitality, complexity and offers great drinkability.

2022 Durif
⇐ 2022 Durif

From the first planting of the variety in WA. Known for it’s power, this Durif is true to type with deep inky black colour and mouth drying tannins. But the palate is balanced nicely with a plushness of sweet plum and mulberry fruits with spice, cinnamon and some subtle herbal/ minty notes.
