Barrecas Wines
Barrecas Wines
From Bunbury on the coast, travel 40km southeast into the countryside and you’ll find the pretty little town of Donnybrook. This cosy little town offers classic country hospitality plus plenty of good things to see, eat and drink. This big heart country living is what makes Barrecas Wines such an unforgettable destination. Barrecas Wines was established by Fil Barrecas at the age of just twenty-one. In the early 1990s Barrecas took a trip to work in his family’s homeland of Italy, and there discovered his intrinsic connection to winemaking while working in a vineyard growing grapes at an especially innovative winery in Sicily.
It’s been thirty years since Barrecas first returned to Donnybrook and immediately began planting the vines that became the basis for this family-owned and operated vineyard. Fil and Kelly Barreca now manage forty-one hectares of cultivated land that produces around twelve different wines each year. These include shiraz, barbera, malbec, nebbiolo, grenache and chardonnay, all of which are 100 percent estate bottled.
The cellar door is always the soul of a winery, and the cellar door at Barrecas Wines is one of the gentlest souls you’ll ever meet. From the moment you are welcomed warmly inside you’ll feel like you’re part of the family. This picturesque little cedar and jarrah room plays host to intimate gatherings more akin to a family reunion than a group of strangers at a wine tasting. With glass in hand and a warm glow in your heart you’ll gaze out over views of the dam and the olive grove as you make memories with friends new and old.
Barrecas Wines form a sublime pair with the extra virgin olive oil produced on site from the premium olives of the estate’s grove, no trip is complete without sampling them both. The two were made to be together, don’t miss your chance to enjoy the full Barrecas experience. The Barrecas online wine and olive oil sales mean you never need to miss out on your favourite drops, and while you’re there make sure to join the Amici Wine Club to receive exclusive member discounts.
Tasting Notes

⇐ 2022 Barbera
This deep red wine has characters of cherries and ripe berries, soft oak tannin’s and finishing with balanced acidity and a hint of sweetness. For many years, it has held ground as being Barrecas’ most superlative wine in house, selling out quickly each year. It is a brilliant example of an unapologetic, serious and beautiful handcrafted wine.

⇐ 2023 Shiraz Malbec
This fine fusion of shiraz and malbec comes together as a 60/40 percent blend, holding good acid, fruit complexity, marriage and character. A full bodied, perfectly balanced wine with fruit characteristics of plum, blackcurrant and chocolate combined excellently with soft oak tannin, leaving an elegant and lasting mouthfeel.

⇐ 2023 Chardonnay
An intensely fruit-driven medium bodied chardonnay, this wine has tropical fruit aromatics and flavours of blended citrus, stone fruit and melons. A concentrated mid palate, and delicious long, crisp finish. It holds good acid and good balance, making it an easy drinking, fruit expressive chardonnay.

⇐ Grenache
This true ‘tesori’ (treasure in Italian) is bursting at the seams with fragrance adding to the red berry fruit flavours that have a silken texture. The perfect fruit-to-tannin balance makes this a beautiful wine drinking experience. Balance within the wine is phenomenal with a fruit profile of red cherry, raspberries, clove and white pepper. Drinking well now, or cellar for up to fifteen years.
