Plantagenet Wines
A short trip south of Perth brings you to Mount Barker, home to Plantagenet Wines. Nestled in the heart of the Great Southern wine region, the estate is framed by beautiful rolling hills. Founded in 1968 by Tony Smith, the estate began with trial plantings of shiraz and cabernet sauvignon on his Bouverie property in Denbarker, marking the establishment of the region’s first vineyards. By 1971, further plantings, including riesling, were added to the Wyjup vineyard, expanding the estate’s offerings.
Spanning approximately 60-hectares in the Mount Barker sub-region, Plantagenet Wines produces nearly 25,000 cases of wine each year. The vineyard specialises in the Great Southern Classics, with shiraz and riesling as the standout varietals, alongside elegant and age-worthy cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay and recently added pinot noir and malbec.
