Brookland Valley & Houghton Wines
Brookland Valley & Houghton Wines
Nestled in the beautiful and scenic Margaret River, Brookland Valley and Houghton wines is authentically Western Australian. Known for its sustainable viticulture, the winery produces thirty indulgent wines a year, including cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, and semillon and sauvignon blanc blends. The winery has impressive award-winning pieces, including its C.W Ferguson 2020 which won James Halliday’s Best Cabernet & Family of the Year in 2024, and its Jack Mann 2021, which won James Halliday’s Best Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon in 2025.
With a rich history dating back to 1836, Houghton was named and founded by army officers, Richmond Houghton, Thomas Yule, and Ninian Lowis. Brookland Valley was later established in 1984 by Malcolm and Dee Jones. Less than 2-kilometers from the Indian Ocean, this unique location has a profound effect on the climatic conditions of the vineyard and the fruit characters of the grapes. The cooling sea breeze keeps the temperatures mild during the summer which allows the grapes to slowly ripen, enhancing their flavour development.
Entering the estate, customers are welcomed by a luscious tree lined meandering driveway, leading to the cellar door that sits over the Wilyabrup brook, surrounded by picturesque, manicured gardens. The cellar door captivates with a feast for the senses, offering older vintage specials, and specially curated cheese and chocolate pairings to accompany every glass of wine. Prebooked picnics and platters can also be enjoyed on the verandah or on the perfectly cut, soft lawns, overlooking the mesmerising brook. Brookland Valley and Houghton also proudly sell local produce, art and giftware.
From the very beginning, Daphnis playing the flute has been depicted on Brookland Valley’s labels. In Greek mythology, Daphnis was a Sicilian shepherd believed to be the inventor of Pastoral poetry, a form of poetry that idealises rural life and landscapes to represent a perfect relationship between man and nature. Inspired by Daphnis, Brookland Valley wines delivers artistry and poetry in every bottle.
Tasting Notes
⇐ Brookland Valley Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
A bouquet of moderate intensity with the classic notes of cigar box, plum, dried bay leaf, cassis and thyme. The French oak maturation adds vanillin and savory complexity to the nose. The subtle oak balances perfectly with the fruit’s power and precision. The long, fine tannins of this wine provide effortless length. Drink now or cellar for 10 or more years.
⇐ Brookland Valley Estate Chardonnay
This wine is pale straw in appearance with intense, bright aromatics of white peaches and nectarine, pink grapefruit, ginger and limey citrus. This is followed by subtle hints of flint, grilled hazelnuts, cashews and fresh brioche. The palate shows a medium to full body and the wine has a lovely texture with a fine acid line that supports the long length of flavour.
⇐ Houghton Jack Mann Cabernet Sauvignon
Dark purple with a bright scarlet hue, this wine’s bouquet is dense with concentrated dark forest fruits, black olives, blackberry, dark chocolate and a subtle overlay of dried herbs – bay leaf, tobacco and wild mint. The palate is full rich, layered with intensity, power and presence. The dense, firm, fine grained tannin is beautifully integrated.
⇐ Houghton EV37 Chenin Blanc
This wine has a pale straw youthful hue, with intense and complex aromatics of apple, lemon curd, quince and pear, with floral hints of chamomile, honeysuckle and jasmine. Oak maturation has provided lifted hazelnut, marzipan, nutmeg and ginger spice flavours. The palate shows laser focus layers of texture and varietal typicity.
