Murray McHenry has been a pioneering figure in Margaret River viticulture since 1981, recognising early on the unique potential of this southern region to produce world-class single-site wines. In 2004, he co-founded McHenry Hohnen to bring this vision to life, based on a commitment to organic farming and regenerative agricultural principles that emphasise long-term vineyard health.

McHenry Hohnen’s vineyards, both family-owned, are nestled in the southern part of Margaret River, where diverse terroirs and microclimates impart distinct character to each site’s wines. The Calgardup Brook Vineyard lies southwest of Witchcliffe, near the Indian Ocean and the majestic \Boranup Karri Forest. Here, ancient, nutrient-poor soils with prevalent degraded limestone and schist give rise to wines known for their delicate, ethereal qualities and a distinctive maritime influence, with hints of saline notes and pronounced minerality. Further inland, Hazel’s Vineyard sits on Rocky Road, about twelve kilometres from the coast in a valley stretching towards the cold Southern Ocean. With vines planted on north-facing slopes, this vineyard benefits from ample sunlight and warmth during the day, while cooler nighttime temperatures preserve the natural acidity of the grapes.

Dotted throughout the vines, olive trees, pastures and chicken coops, you’ll find strategically placed bee hives. These bees play a crucial role as the primary pollinators of many of the cover crops within the vineyard, while also serving as vital environmental indicators. Beyond the vineyard, they pollinate the avocado, citrus, and stone fruit orchards and help keep the winery staff’s vegetable gardens stocked with healthy, seasonal produce year-round.

Instead of relying on chemical sprays to control destructive pests, McHenry Hohnen prefers to work with nature. It encourages beneficial insects to help keep pest populations in check, creating a balanced ecosystem that thrives without the need for synthetic interventions. This, along with a carbon-neutral approach, reflects the team’s commitment to sustainability in every aspect of the farm.

At the heart of its philosophy is the team, led by head winemaker Jacopo Dali Canni, supported by Henry Wynne and head viticulturalist Ben Seiber. With their combined international experience and shared passion for minimal-intervention winemaking, they craft single-vineyard wines that are honest, unique and truly hand-made. Of all the places they could have settled, they chose Margaret River for its exceptional terroir and the opportunity to make wines that reflect the land.

Tasting Notes

Hazel’s Vineyard Chardonnay
⇐ Hazel’s Vineyard Chardonnay

Flint rock, pink grapefruit and mealy aromas give way to white nectarine, frangipani and a seductive nougat element. Elegant and complex, this chardonnay is powerful in fruit concentration and restrained by a precise acid line, with talk-like phenolics and impressive persistence. A true representation of this exceptional gravelly vineyard in southern Margaret River.

Chloé Rosé
⇐ Chloé Rosé

This pale rosé belies a powerfully flavoured and layered drink. Floral notes of star jasmine and wet stone leap from the glass together with wild strawberry and fresh pastry undertones. The palate is creamy and textured, with juicy nectarine flavours and aromatic orange zest. Beautifully refreshing and satisfying, this dry rosé shows definition and drive on the palate with an intriguing frame of tannins and a distinctive saline aftertaste.

BDX
⇐ BDX

A malbec dominant blend with cabernet sauvignon providing structure and petit verdot adding aromatic lift, this wine bursts with aromas of mulberry compote and violets. Sweetened spices and black cherries are complemented by more savoury notes of cedar, dry herbs and mocha. The palate is voluminous yet framed by fine tannins providing length and aging potential to this deliciously fragrant wine.

Rolling Stone
⇐ Rolling Stone

The nose is a display of fragrant violets, cassis and fresh earth, complemented by savoury notes of black olive, bay leaf and dark chocolate. The palate is powerful yet elegant and refined, combining a dense core of blueberries, gravel dust and cedar spice with firm but fine tannins providing impressive length.
