Nikola Estate Joins Old Vine Charter
Nikola Estate is proud to join the Swan Valley Old Vine Charter, an initiative dedicated to safeguarding Western Australia’s oldest grapevines while celebrating the region’s storied winemaking tradition.
As one of the nineteen founding members of the Charter, Nikola Estate joins forces with other passionate producers to protect and celebrate the region’s enduring legacy. The Swan Valley boasts some of the oldest grapevines in Western Australia, with roots stretching back over a century. By joining the Charter, Nikola Estate underscores its commitment to crafting exceptional wines that showcase the unique qualities of these historic vines, including its own plantings, which date back to the 1950s.
Among these are the estate’s beautiful chenin blanc vines, and verdelho vines. These cherished vines yield fruit that contributes to wines of remarkable depth, vibrancy and complexity, embodying the character and history of the Swan Valley.
The Swan Valley Old Vine Charter is modelled on the Barossa Old Vine Charter, categorising vines by age: Old Vine (more than thirty-five years), Survivor (more than seventy years), Centenarian (more than 100 years) and Ancestor (more than 125 years). The fruit from these vines reflects the strength and resilience of generations of viticultural care.
Esteemed wine critic Huon Hooke of The Real Review officially launched the program this year, emphasising the importance of recognising and preserving the region’s vinous treasures. Nikola Estate’s involvement in the Charter demonstrates its dedication to winemaking excellence and preserving the heritage embedded in these extraordinary vines.
