Paul Conti Wines
Paul Conti Wines
Located just thirty minutes from the city, Paul Conti Wines boasts a beautiful garden space and alfresco area for visitors to enjoy a bottle or glass of wine. The onsite restaurant, Harry’s at Conti, serves Mediterranean and classical French cuisine in a delectable fine dining experience, headed by chef Harry Yakinthou, who was trained by the ‘Godfather’ of French cuisine, Michel Roux Sr.
Paul Conti Wines was one of the first wineries to be established in suburban Perth, positioning it as one of the pioneers of the Western Australia wine industry. The winery was founded by Paul’s father, Carmelo Conti, in 1948. Paul Conti was the first to produce premium bottled wines from the unique sandy Tuart soils found along Western Australia’s Swan coastal region. In 1968, he achieved his iconic Mariginiup Shiraz (then Hermitage) which remains as the winery’s flagship wine today. Third-generation winemaker, Jason Conti, was the first Western Australian winemaker to produce a sparkling chenin blanc called Lorenza, inspired by his time sampling the Cremant de Loire styles in France.
Today, Paul Conti Wines sources most of its fruit from its Margaret River vineyard in the celebrated region of Wilyabrup. The winery is one hundred percent family-owned and -operated and you will often find winemaker Jason Conti assisting customers at the cellar door.
Tasting Notes
⇐ 2024 Tuart Block Chenin Blanc
This wine exhibits lifted tropical fruit flavours with hints of apricot and peachy aromatics. The natural acidity balances the rich fruit flavours, followed by a long clean finish. A perfect accompaniment to a warm summer afternoon, this wine is ideally suited to Mediterranean dishes, a traditional antipasto plate or fresh natural oysters.
⇐ 2023 Nereo D’Avola
This medium-bodied, robust red exhibits dry cherries, dark chocolate and abundant ripe plum characters against a smooth fine palate and velvety tannings. It offers aromatic hints of seasoned American oak and a slight ripe fruit cake character. It is suited to pairing with grilled lamb or richly sauced pasta dishes, such as puttanesca or traditional Sicilian caponata.
