Since 1968, Plantagenet has always been family-owned, with current owners Tom and Jo Wisdom continuing to cultivate and nurture the first Great Southern vineyards of the region. Producing premium Great Southern classic styles from its estate vineyards, meticulous care is taken in the vineyard to provide quality parcels of fruit for the winemaking team to harness the characteristics of this exceptional, cool-climate region. The aim is to create wines of provenance that reflect the traditions and outstanding potential of the Great Southern region.
The climate is cool-temperate and strongly influenced by the proximity of the Southern Ocean. Rainfall is plentiful and even during the hottest Australian summer, daytime temperatures are moderated by cooling evening sea breezes. The warm days and cool nights of the Great Southern allow maximum retention of acidity and expression of the varietal flavours and aromas required for complex wines.
Plantagenet Wines is committed to sustainability in the vineyard, by including mulching, composting, replanting of native vegetation, and waterway restoration to maximise biodiversity.
Plantagenet Wines’ vineyard estate has been carved out of the region’s distinctive marri soils, named after the massive native marri, or redgum trees that grow there. The soil is built up of gravelly, sandy loams sitting on a base of clay or ironstone rock, while the scenic vineyard boasts a landscape of forested cliffs and resplendent mountain ranges, grazing pastures and towns steeped in history.
As the first commercial winery of the region, Plantagenet Wines is a historic site brimming with personality. The rustic mudbrick and timber cellar door is in the heart of the Mount Barker township and the heart of the Great Southern wine region. Whether you’re sampling the Plantagenet Wines range or enjoying a casual lunch, you will get a chance to savour the taste of the fresh local produce, perfectly matched with each Plantagenet wine.
Guided tastings of the rare museum and limited release Wyjup Collection wines – an extensive and highly sought after collection for aged-wine enthusiasts – are also available at the gorgeous cellar door for those who want a further touch of grandeur.
⇐ 2018 Plantagenet Three Lions Shiraz
Lifted aromatics, mulberry and violet floral anise, black pepper, iodine. Firm, even tannins, plush and dense, blue fruits, plum, spicy charry oak, cardamom, nutmeg, subtle savouriness, good fresh acid with a brooding lingering finish.
⇐ 2020 Wyjup Collection Pinot Noir
Ethereal, vineous aromatics reminiscent of black cherry and ripe tomatoes with some cashew nuttiness. A full, rounded mid palate with dense pinot character is carried by the silkiest of tannins.
⇐ 2020 Plantagenet ‘Aquitaine’ Cabernet Sauvignon
Lifted blackberry, cassis and olive with subtle tobacco leaf and nuances of cedar and toasty char from the oak. A very fine, poised palate of dark berries, olive and earth have beautifully interwoven fine supple oak tannins. Deceptively densely packed with naturally derived grape structure giving the wine a firm lingering finish of cassis and tapenade.
⇐ 2021 Wyjup Collection Riesling
Aromatics of fresh zesty lime and orange blossom. The palate structure is all about finesse and Riesling purity, but with underlying intensity and focus. Pristine citrus flavours glide over the mid-palate followed by fine-boned structure and power.
