St Aidan Wines

St Aidan Wines

The story of St Aidan Wines begins with the desire to get away from the noise of the city, embrace nature and to realise a love of the land. Family-owned and -operated, Mary and Philip Smith purchased the ten-hectare property thirty years ago. They started planting wine grapes in 1997, and their first wines – the Cabernet Sauvignon 2000 and the Chardonnay 2001 – were released in 2001.

Expanding their horizons and their enthusiasm for the craft, the vineyard continued to grow over the next six years, with the addition of muscat, sauvignon blanc and semillon, merlot, malbec and more chardonnay. The couple continued to grow their knowledge. To make the most of the Mediterranean climate, an alternative variety – tempranillo – was planted in 2010 and has impressed fellow wine enthusiasts. The fiano variety was planted in 2020 as a result.

After a slew of awards for the high quality of their wines, Mary and Philip have not looked back, and soon after the release of their wines, the cellar door was opened to the public, to be followed by the café in 2009 and the fully-equipped functions centre in 2014 next to the Cellar Door Restaurant.

Taking its name from the district’s historic community church, which sits on the boundary of the winery, St Aidan Wines is situated in the picturesque Ferguson Valley at the heart of the Geographe wine region.

St Aidan Wines produces a broad variety of wines, with the capacity to craft sweet, dry, still, sparkling, white, pink and red wines. With three hectares under vine on site producing eleven varieties of wine per year, St Aidan Wines maintains a commitment to produce something for every palate. Its varieties are chardonnay, fiano, sauvignon blanc and semillon, cabernet, tempranillo, merlot, malbec and muscat. This year they won the Best White Wine and Wine of Show awards with their 2023 sauvignon blanc/semillon; plus, they have won Best Fortified Wine six years in a row for their muscat which can be seen being enjoyed by family matriarch, Zena (below right).

If you’re looking for the right venue for an event, then St Aidan Wines has the capacity to cater for it, hosting weddings, parties and business-related events. The winery puts on a great show in the summer months, with outdoor movies and concerts for you to view amidst the warm weather and countryside views.

Tasting Notes

2021 Artus Chardonnay
⇐ 2021 Sparkling Chardonnay

This sparkling chardonnay is predominantly made up of Clone 7 Chardonnay grapes planted in 1998. It is picked while there is lots of natural acid, and green apple flavours persist. The mouth-filling mousse and yeasty oat biscuit flavours from the secondary ferment are accompanied by red apple and lime zest.

2018 Morus Cabernet Sauvignon
⇐ 2021 ‘Ferguson’ Chardonnay 2021

Hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed and barrel fermented using natural wild yeasts. This wine is perfectly matched with the French oak barriques and hogshead to produce a generous mouth-filling wine with melon, nashi and almond notes.

2021 Rebus Cabernet Sauvignon
⇐ 2022 Tempranillo

This Geographe wine region hero shows beautiful varietal expression in our vineyard. Hand tended and picked, the wine is made with a minimal oak influence, producing juicy cherry compote and sarsaparilla flavours. The soft, dusty tannins and long-mixed spice finish make it a wine well paired with lamb dishes and antipasto platters.

2022 Floris Chardonnay
⇐ 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon

First planted in 1997, the vines create grapes with mature and well-balanced flavours. With a cassis nose and black berry flavours, there is a beautiful dark chocolate (85%) and cedar element. The tannins and length on the palate make this a wine to be enjoyed for many years to come.
