West Cape Howe Wines
West Cape Howe Wines
West Cape Howe Wines was founded in 1997, quickly becoming one of Western Australia’s favourite wine brands. Now at the picturesque ‘Langton’ property in the heart of the Mount Barker wine district, their vineyards consistently produce the highest quality fruit, resulting in award winning wines with balance, structure and flavour.
Owned by four Western Australian families, Gavin Berry has been the Managing Partner & SeniorWinemaker of West Cape Howe Wines since 2004 and has had over thirty vintages in the Great Southern region. Over time, the partnership has acquired some of the oldest vineyard resources in the state, giving it unparalleled access to the best and most consistent quality fruit that the cool Great Southern wine region has to offer.
Sustainable practices are an important part of West Cape Howe’s viticulture and winemaking with many organic principles incorporated into the everyday vineyard systems and minimal herbicide is used on the vines. Solar panels and runoff-generated water are used on site for both the vineyard and nonproduction areas of the winery, while a wastewater treatment plant allows the cycle to continue.
Premium wine can only come from excellent fruit; West Cape Howe Wines’ winemakers dedicate many months leading up to vintage, visiting and monitoring vineyards throughout the region to ensurethat only the best parcels of fruit are selected and picked for the range. The driving philosophy at West Cape Howe Wines is simple: to make delicious wines that people love to drink.
With the winery having the largest range of wines on offer, every taste is catered for – from sparkling wine, crisp rieslings and chardonnays to full bodied reds including pinot noir, tempranillo, shiraz, malbec and cabernet sauvignon plus several blends.
With a huge range of wines available for tasting at West Cape’s cellar door, enjoy your favourite wine with a freshly made pizza or a platter to share. Relax by the open fire in winter or if weather permits, picnic on the expansive lawns across the property and delight in the beautiful surrounding scenery. For coffee lovers, West Cape Howe Wine’s excellent coffee is made with beans roasted on site. With the cellar door conveniently open seven days a week, it’s definitely worth a visit.
⇐ 2023 Semillon Sauvignon Blanc
Gently aromatic, this wine has delicate tropical fruit characters with some light passionfruit and ripe pear on the nose,
all complexed with just a hint of cut grass. Fresh and light with delicious light tropical fruit flavours and some sweet citrus and honeydew melon fruit characters.
⇐ 2023 Riesling
Distinctive citrussy characters typical of cool climate riesling; aromas of sweet limes like a baked lime cheesecake with a hint of minerality. Good depth of lovely citrus and lemon sherbet characters and is well balanced with excellent length of flavour. The tangy, lemony acidity provides great freshness and zestiness and contributes to the wine’s beautifully clean and crisp, long finish.
⇐ 2022 Tempranillo
A lovely nose with intense aromas of spicy plums, black cherries and dark chocolate. Rich, dark berry fruit flavours along with dusty plum & tamarillo fruit characters. It has a great tannin structure upfront with the quite chewy, dusty and lightly drying tannins giving the wine its great framework.
⇐ 2019 “Two Steps” Shiraz
Intense, ripe satsuma plum aromas with slightly smoky, dark berry fruit characters. This has lovely mouth filling, juicy, dark plum fruit flavours. These generous, sweet fruit flavours are balanced by lightly drying tannins picked up during its oak maturation. There are lifted, lightly spicy characters with a hint of pepperiness, which sit well with the wine’s gentle acidity.
