Whicher Ridge Wines

Whicher Ridge Wines

The story of Whicher Ridge Wines begins with Neil and Cathy Howard, a vigneron and winemaking couple. After many years working for other wineries across Australia, they decided to take the big step: running their own small winery business. Planting a vineyard in 2003, they produced their first small batch wines in 2008. Twenty years later, Whicher Ridge Wines still possesses the same passion and commitment to making the very best wine it can, each and every year.

Whicher Ridge Wines was born from a lot of hard work, but Neil and Cathy love what they do. A true artisan winery, the couple undertake all of the vineyard and winery work themselves, following sustainable farming practices in the vineyard and traditional, minimal intervention winemaking practices in the winery.

Turning a visit to Whicher Ridge Wines into a unique experience is easy with its wine sensory garden. On a guided tour with the winemaker herself, visitors learn how to describe wine flavours and discover how to make informed wine and food pairings.

Whicher Ridge Wines is a small winery making around 1500-2000 cases per year. Most of the grapes come from the winery’s own five hectares of vineyard which, depending on the vintage, can produce ten to fourteen different wines per year. The wines produced are sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, viognier, malbec, mourvedre, montepulciano, petit verdot, shiraz and cabernet sauvignon.

Over the years, Whicher Ridge Wines has been awarded 5-star winery rating by Halliday and one of ten Dark Horse Wineries in 2015. In recent years, the winery has been awarded for its cellar door and wine tasting experience, for being Best Small Cellar Door, Star Cellar Door and Best Wine Tasting Experience in the Gourmet Traveller Wine Cellar Door awards.

Sustainably grown, small batch wines are Whicher Ridge Wine’s speciality. Its small batch wines may be limited in quantity (150 to 250 cases is a typical batch volume), but Neil and Cathy carefully make each and every wine with plenty of character, in a food friendly style with complex flavours, texture, balance and length.

Tasting Notes

2019 Cabernet Sauvignon
⇐ Elevage Sauvignon Blanc

‘Elevage’, a French term, means ‘our hands have grown the grapes and made the wine’. Partial barrel fermentation and maturation on yeast lees produces a textured wine. Pale straw in colour with a fresh green hue, with aromas of white pear, guava, lemongrass and sweet lemon. The palate is smooth and balanced, with lingering bright fruit flavours of pear and white nectarine.

2021 Coastal Cabernet Sauvignon
⇐ Mademoiselle V Viognier

Named ‘Miss V’ for the effort it takes to grow and turn in to wine. Remaining on the yeast lees for 12 months gives the wine a velvety texture. Pale straw-green in colour, with aromas of fresh apricot, ginger, musk, white peach and ripe pear. The rich stonefruit and cumquat flavours continue on the palate with pear and ginger lingering on the finish.

2022 Chardonnay
⇐ Le Puissant Malbec

Le Puissant means ‘the powerful one’. Colour is a deep, inky purple. Flavours are intense and complex, with ripe mulberries, blackberries, dark cherries and cranberries, mixed with spicy and earthy flavours of anise, pomegranate and rose hip tea. The tannins are surprisingly velvety in texture for such a powerfully flavoured wine, giving it an elegant structure and a long, lingering finish.

2023 Chenin Blanc
⇐ Elevation Cabernet Sauvignon

The name comes from the higher elevation of the vineyard. The colour is a deep, plum red with purple hues. Aromas of dried mint, blueberries, black olives and dark chocolate partner with the flavours of dark chocolate, mint and fresh blackberries that unfold on the palate, complemented by finely textured grainy tannins.
