Willespie
Willespie
Established in 1976, Willespie is one of the original family-owned, working farm wineries in the Margaret River region. The vineyard was planted by ex-schoolteachers, Kevin and Marian Squance and their children. The next generation have now taken on the commitment to keep the dream alive and ensure that Willespie continues to maintain its prestigious reputation as one of Wilyabrup’s premium boutique wine producers.
This beautiful part of the Margaret River wine region in the south-west of Western Australia is characterised by a Mediterranean climate with maritime influences and is renowned worldwide for consistently producing premium wines with alluring aromatics, intense flavours and elegant structure.
Willespie’s Old School Range pays tribute to its internationally and classically inspired approach to winemaking, championing classic noble grape varieties such as cabernet sauvignon, merlot, chardonnay, verdelho, and semillon. The winery produces premium, bottle-aged red wines and specialises in verdelho, producing this varietal as a sparkling, dry white, late harvest and fortified wine.
Located in the magnificent Wilyabrup sub-region, a three-hour drive south of Perth, Willespie’s property spans over forty hectares of which thirteen hectares are under vine. Willespie’s rustic cellar door offers tastings of its premium wines and boasts the most beautiful view over Wilyabrup’s sprawling vineyard vistas, offering a stunning backdrop for a BYO picnic on the picturesque balcony, a glass with friends, or your dream wedding or special event. A dog-friendly cellar door welcomes your furry friend to enjoy the grounds as you indulge in Willespie’s stunning wines.
Willespie has a loyal following, and those participating in their VIP wine program have priority access to some of the reserve and other limited release wines, as well as access to special member-only events and exclusive wine club discounts. With stone and local timber used in the construction of the charming and rustic winery, the property blends harmoniously with the jarrah and marri forest beyond and solidifies it as a heartfelt hidden gem within Margaret River’s famed “Golden Triangle” well worth discovering.
Tasting Notes
⇐ Old School Cabernet Sauvignon
Simply WOW! This is a powerful yet superbly balanced cabernet sauvignon. With fruit for this wine coming from the unirrigated vines planted in 1976, the very essence of Willespie has been captured in a bottle. Sweet loam sits alongside blackcurrant and dark chocolate, underpinned with structured tannins and balanced acidity.
⇐ Old School Chardonnay
The fruit was handpicked and pressed straight to French oak barriques where it was allowed to ferment naturally resulting in a chardonnay rich in depth and complexity. A wine to be enjoyed now or in the years to come.
⇐ Shiraz
A rich nose with notes of ripe dark berries, chocolate and a hint of spice. Drinking beautifully now the story will develop even further with careful cellaring.
⇐ Verdelho
Notes of green apple, combine with underlying hints of lime and grapefruit. With a complex layered nose this is a well-balanced wine that maintains its fruitiness with a dry rounded acidity and has developed beautifully in the bottle.
